How to Pack Electronics for Moving: A Device-by-Device Guide
Last Updated: 17 May 2026
Electronics are among the most valuable and most easily damaged items in any household move. The combination of sensitive internal components, glass surfaces, and awkward shapes makes them disproportionately risky to pack without proper technique. Yet most households treat electronics the same way they treat books or kitchen items — wrapped in newspaper, placed in a random box, and hoped for the best.
This guide takes a device-by-device approach to packing electronics and home appliances for an Indian household move. Each section covers the specific risks for that device type, the materials needed, and the correct packing method. Following these steps significantly reduces the likelihood of damage during loading, transit, and unloading — which together represent the three highest-risk moments for electronics in any move.
Television (LCD, LED, OLED, QLED)
A television screen is the most fragile surface in the average Indian home. The panel can crack from pressure applied to almost any point on the face, and a cracked panel renders the television worthless even if every other component functions perfectly. The original packaging is far superior to any aftermarket alternative — if you have kept the original box and foam inserts, use them without hesitation.
- Original box: Always the first choice. The manufacturer-designed foam inserts are engineered to protect that specific model against impact during transport.
- Without original box: Wrap the screen in two layers of bubble wrap secured with tape that does not touch the screen surface. Place the TV upright inside a purpose-sized TV moving box — never lay a flat-screen television face-down or on its back during transport.
- Remove the stand and pack it separately — a mounted stand creates a lever point that concentrates stress on the screen during impact.
- Mark all four sides of the box FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP before handing to movers.
- Transport the television in an upright position only — instruct your movers explicitly before loading.
Laptop and Desktop Computer
Laptops are structurally more resilient than televisions during a move because the hinge design distributes impact more evenly, but hard drives and SSDs remain vulnerable to vibration and sudden jolts. The priority for desktop computers is the tower unit, which houses components far more sensitive to static electricity and vibration than the monitor.
- Back up all data to an external drive or cloud storage before packing — treat this as a non-negotiable step regardless of how short or smooth the move is expected to be.
- Pack the laptop in its carry bag with a layer of bubble wrap around the outside, then place it in a box with padding on all six sides.
- For desktop towers: discharge any static before handling internal components, pack the tower upright in the original box if available, or wrap in an anti-static bag before bubble wrap.
- Pack the keyboard, mouse, and cables in a labelled zip-lock bag placed in the same box as the computer.
- Do not stack any other items on top of boxes containing computers.
Washing Machine
A washing machine is one of the most commonly damaged appliances during a house move in India, not because of poor packing but because of the drum. The drum is suspended on springs and bearings that are not designed to absorb the lateral forces generated during loading onto a truck or transit over rough roads. The solution is a drum lock — a bolt or transport bolt that immobilises the drum during transit.
- Locate or purchase the transport bolts for your washing machine model before moving day — most manufacturers include them with the original unit and they can also be sourced online for common brands.
- Insert the transport bolts into the designated points at the rear of the machine before moving — this step is essential and non-negotiable for front-loading machines.
- Disconnect the water inlet hose and drain hose completely and allow the machine to dry internally for 24 hours before moving.
- Wrap the drum door in bubble wrap to protect the glass and prevent it from opening during transit.
- Transport the machine upright — never on its side or front.
Refrigerator
A refrigerator requires specific preparation before a move because the refrigerant and compressor oil can be damaged if the unit is transported in the wrong orientation or without adequate rest time after transit. These are not minor considerations — a refrigerator compressor that is damaged during transport may require expensive repair or full replacement.
- Defrost the refrigerator completely at least 24 hours before moving day — transporting a unit with ice or standing water causes rust, mould, and spillage.
- Remove all food, shelves, and drawers. Pack shelves and drawers separately wrapped in bubble wrap.
- Tape the refrigerator door securely closed with moving tape — not adhesive tape that will damage the surface finish.
- Transport the refrigerator upright only — transporting on its side can allow compressor oil to migrate into the refrigerant lines, which requires a 24-hour rest period before powering on after transport.
- After delivery, wait a minimum of 3 to 4 hours before switching the refrigerator on to allow the compressor oil to settle.
Air Conditioner (Split Unit)
A split air conditioning unit has two components that require separate handling: the indoor unit and the outdoor compressor unit. Both components contain refrigerant lines and should only be disconnected by a qualified HVAC technician. Attempting to disconnect the refrigerant lines without the correct equipment will release the refrigerant, which is both environmentally harmful and will render the unit non-functional until regassed at significant cost.
- Book a qualified AC technician to disconnect both the indoor and outdoor units at least one day before moving day.
- Have the technician pump down the refrigerant into the outdoor unit before disconnecting the lines — this preserves the refrigerant and avoids the cost of regassing at the new home.
- Transport the outdoor compressor unit in its original packaging or secured upright with padding on all sides.
- Book a technician to reinstall and recommission the unit at the new home before using it.
