The Ultimate 30-Day Moving Checklist for India
Last Updated: 03 May 2026
A successful house move in India is not the result of luck — it is the outcome of systematic planning that begins well before moving day. The most stressful relocations share one common cause: tasks that were left too late pile up in the final 48 hours, creating a chaotic and exhausting experience. A structured 30-day checklist prevents this entirely by distributing the workload into manageable weekly phases.
This checklist is designed specifically for households relocating within or between cities in India. It accounts for the unique requirements of the Indian moving process — including booking packers and movers in advance, managing utility disconnections, updating Aadhaar and PAN addresses, and handling school transfers. Follow each week in sequence and your move will proceed in a controlled, confident manner.
Week One: Plan and Book (Days 30 to 22)
The first week is for establishing the foundations. Every decision made now saves hours of effort later. Begin by contacting at least three packers and movers companies and requesting in-home surveys and written quotations. Do not accept quotes given over the phone without a physical visit — an in-home survey is the only way to get an accurate estimate for the volume and nature of your goods.
- Contact at least three packers and movers companies for written quotations
- Book the confirmed company and get a signed service agreement with the moving date
- Notify your landlord formally in writing if you are vacating a rented property
- Begin researching the new neighbourhood: schools, hospitals, grocery stores, and transport
- Start the school transfer process if you have children moving with you
- Confirm your new accommodation lease or property purchase paperwork
Week Two: Sort, Declutter, and Gather Supplies (Days 21 to 15)
This week is dedicated entirely to reducing the volume of items you will move. Go through every room systematically and sort items into four categories: keep, donate, sell, and discard. The fewer items you move, the lower your packing and transport cost, and the faster unpacking will be in the new home. Arrange a garage sale or list items on platforms such as OLX before moving day.
- Declutter every room — sort all items into keep, donate, sell, or discard
- Gather packing supplies: boxes in multiple sizes, bubble wrap, packing tape, markers, and labels
- Begin packing items that are rarely used: seasonal decor, spare linen, extra books, and collectibles
- Photograph the contents of each box as you pack for easy reference during unpacking
- Arrange donation pickup or drop-off for unwanted but usable items
Week Three: Pack and Notify Institutions (Days 14 to 8)
This is the primary packing week. Work through one room at a time, labelling every box with its contents and the destination room in the new home. Simultaneously, notify all relevant institutions of your change of address. This is one of the most commonly forgotten steps and can cause disruption to banking, insurance, and government services if delayed.
- Pack all non-essential rooms: guest room, study, storage areas, and garage
- Label every box clearly on the top and at least two sides with contents and destination room
- Notify your bank, employer payroll department, and insurance providers of the address change
- Update your address on Aadhaar, PAN card, and voter ID through the appropriate government portals
- Arrange disconnection of electricity, gas, water, and internet at the old address
- Book new utility connections at the new address, specifying the move-in date
- Confirm all moving day logistics with your packers and movers company
Moving Week: Final Preparations (Days 7 to 1)
The final week is for completing packing, cleaning, and last-minute logistics. By now, only everyday essentials should remain unpacked. Pack a dedicated moving day bag containing items you will need immediate access to: three days of clothing, toiletries, medications, phone chargers, important documents, cash, and a small toolkit with a screwdriver and measuring tape for reassembling furniture in the new home.
- Pack all remaining rooms, leaving out only items needed for the final night
- Defrost and clean the refrigerator at least 24 hours before moving day
- Prepare a clearly labelled moving day essentials bag — keep this with you, not in the truck
- Conduct a final walkthrough of the property checking all cupboards, lofts, and outdoor areas
- Photograph the condition of the old property for your records before handing back keys
- On moving day: supervise the loading process, verify every item against the inventory, and check the property one final time before the truck departs
