Updating your address after a house move in India is one of the most frequently delayed post-move tasks — and one of the most consequential when left too long. An outdated address on your Aadhaar card, bank account, or vehicle registration can cause missed correspondence, failed KYC verifications, insurance claim complications, and even legal difficulties in some situations. The process itself is straightforward once you know exactly which institutions to contact and in what order.
This checklist covers every category of address update required after a residential move in India, organised by priority. Complete the high-priority updates within the first two weeks of moving and the remaining updates within the first month. Keeping a record of each update request — including date submitted and reference number — will prove useful if any follow-up is required.
High Priority: Update Within the First Two Weeks
These updates are either legally required within a specific timeframe or carry the highest practical risk if delayed. Address them before any others.
- Aadhaar Card: Update via the UIDAI portal (uidai.gov.in) or visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra with proof of new address. Online update costs Rs. 50 and takes 7 to 10 working days to reflect.
- Bank Accounts: Visit your branch or update through net banking with a proof of address document. Update all accounts — savings, current, and fixed deposit — not just the primary one.
- Employer Records: Notify your HR or payroll department immediately — salary slips, Form 16, and official correspondence are sent to the address on file.
- Insurance Policies: Contact your health, life, and vehicle insurance providers. An incorrect address can complicate claim processing and policy renewal communications.
- LPG and Utility Connections: Transfer or register your LPG connection at the new address through your distributor. Update electricity and water accounts with the respective authority.
Government Documents: Update Within the First Month
Government-issued identity and registration documents require address accuracy for legal compliance and for use as proof of address in future transactions.
- PAN Card: Address change requests can be submitted online through the NSDL or UTIITSL portals. A new PAN card with the updated address will be dispatched to the new address within 15 to 20 working days.
- Driving Licence: Apply for an address update at your nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) or through the Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in) with proof of new address.
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC): The vehicle RC must be updated at the RTO to reflect the new address, particularly important if you are moving to a different state where re-registration may also be required.
- Voter ID (Electoral Photo Identity Card): Submit Form 8A through the National Voters Service Portal (nvsp.in) or at the Electoral Registration Office to update your voter registration to the new constituency.
- Passport: If your passport address page is blank or your current address is on a separate document, no immediate update is required — update at the time of your next passport renewal.
Financial and Investment Accounts
All financial accounts must carry an accurate address for regulatory compliance and to ensure that physical correspondence — account statements, interest certificates, and maturity notices — reaches you correctly.
- Mutual Funds and Demat Account: Update your address with your broker and depository participant (CDSL or NSDL). Many brokers allow online address updates through their app or portal with a KYC proof upload.
- PPF and Post Office Accounts: Visit the respective branch with the passbook and a proof of new address to initiate the update.
- Credit Cards: Update with each card issuer separately — do not assume a bank account address update covers your credit card as they may be managed by different divisions.

These updates are lower in legal priority but high in practical importance for day-to-day convenience. Many can be completed online in under five minutes each.
- E-commerce accounts: Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, and any other platforms where you shop regularly
- Food and grocery delivery: Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket, and Blinkit saved addresses
- Streaming and subscription services: Netflix, Amazon Prime, and any physical magazine or book subscriptions
- Professional memberships and associations: update your registered address with any professional body or trade association you belong to
- Gym, club, and society memberships: inform the membership team in writing to update your records
